Arunachal
finds mention in the literature of
Kalika Purana and Mahabharata. This
place is supposed to be the Prabhu
Mountains of the Puranas. It was here
that sage Parashuram washed away his
sin, sage Vyasa meditated, King Bhishmaka
founded his kingdom and Lord Krishna
married his consort Rukmini.

Arunachal
Pradesh is considered to be the "nature's
treasure trove"and home to orchids, known
for their exquisitely beautiful blooms, from
one of the dominant taxa with more than six
hundred species, occurring in varying elevations
and climatic conditions throughout the state.
Home
to a complex mix of communities, mostly tribal,
Arunachal Pradesh is primarily a tribal society.
The population is mainly of the Mangoloid and
Tibeto-Burmese stock. The tribes range from
slash-and-burn animists to the Tibetan Buddhist
Monpa villages in the West and Thai people,
the khampti in the East. The largest groups
are the Adi in the Along area, the Misaimi in
the ranges of North-East of Pasighat and the
Nishi around Itanagar. There are about 20 major
tribes divided into sub-tribes. The principal
tribes are Adi, Nishi, Apatani, Tagin, Misaim,
Monpa, Aka, Nocte,Wancho, Singpho, Tangsha,
Khampti, Padma, Miris and Sherdukpen. The people
in general are friendly, amiable and colourful.
The tribal customs bind the tribesmen together
into a solid community. The society is patriarchal
and primogeniture. Fundamental laws of inheritance
with variations are not uncommon. The tribes
follow endogamy and strictly observe the rule
of clan exogamy. Polygamy is socially sanctioned
and practised most. The organisational Institutions
administer the community and look after the
welfare of the people.

Nagaland
inhabited by the Naga tribes, captured international
attention during world war 2, because it
was here that the Japanese advance was halted
by British and Indian troops. Nagas were
spirited warriors and by the end of the
19th century the British reached peace with
Nagas and found them useful as allies in
war against the Japanese. After India's
independence, Nagaland became a state in
31 December 1963. |

This
village has a traditional Naga ceremonial
gateway carved with motifs of guns, warriors
and symbols of prosperity at the entrance
to the village. The traditional Naga house
built here had crossed 'horns' on the
gables, carved heads to signify the status
of the family, a huge basket to hold the
grain in front of the house. The nearest
airport and railhead are at Dimapur, Nagaland's
gateway and commercial centre. |
